What are aircraft structural components?

Primary structure carries the main flight and ground loads: fuselage frames and bulkheads, wing spars and ribs, stringers and longerons. Secondary or support structure attaches systems, interiors and equipment to it: brackets, clips, fittings, reinforcements and mounts.

Our typical scope is support structure and installation hardware machined to your drawing. For the machining route of each part family, see how aerospace structural parts are machined.

  • Brackets, clips and fittings
  • Mount blocks, spacers and connector holders
  • Window frames, seat frames and footrest structures
  • Panel reinforcements and locating shafts

  • Reinforcements and panels

Panel reinforcements that stiffen panels; spreadbars that carry aisle floor loads.

    7050 / 7075 aluminum
  • Shafts and locating pins

Shafts, pins and sleeves that position and align mating parts.

    15-5PH / 17-4PH stainless, Ti-6Al-4V
Materials

Materials and tempers

Traced by heat or lot, with mill certificates on request: see aluminum and titanium.

Request a Quote

7075-T7351 plate

Stress-relieved, overaged: less distortion, better SCC resistance than T6

7050-T7451 plate

Thick hogged-out parts; keeps toughness and SCC resistance through the section

2024-T351

Fatigue and damage tolerance in tension-loaded parts

6061-T651

Lower-load brackets and frames; good corrosion resistance and machinability

Ti-6Al-4V (AMS 4911)

Strong for its weight; galvanically compatible with carbon-fiber structure

15-5PH / 17-4PH

High-load pins, lugs and shafts that need strength and corrosion resistance

Process

Machining and finishing of structural parts

Residual stress

Stress-relieved tempers, balanced roughing on both faces, a rest, then light re-clamping to finish.

Fastener-hole position

True position is checked against the drawing's datums (ASME Y14.5), not the nearest edge.

Fewer setups

5-axis machining puts angled faces and holes in one setup on one datum scheme.

Chem film (MIL-DTL-5541)

Conductive, corrosion-protected aluminum by chromate conversion coating, per the drawing's callout.

Anodizing (MIL-A-8625)

Type II for corrosion protection of structural aluminum; Type III hard anodizing for wear-resistant faces.

Passivation (AMS 2700)

Stainless steel pins, lugs and shafts, passivated per the drawing's callout.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions on structural part materials, tempers, titanium fittings, distortion control and inspection data.

What are the five main structural components of an airplane?
Usually the fuselage, wings, empennage (tail), landing gear and powerplant, the grouping used in FAA pilot training material. We machine the brackets, fittings and mounting hardware that attach systems and interiors to that structure.
Which aluminum temper is best for machined structural parts?
Stress-relieved tempers such as 7075-T7351 or 7050-T7451. They limit distortion during machining and resist stress-corrosion cracking better than T6.
Can you machine titanium structural fittings?
Yes, Ti-6Al-4V is one of the materials we machine for fittings and brackets.
How do you control distortion on thin-walled parts?
Stress-relieved plate, balanced roughing on both faces, rest between roughing and finishing, and fixtures designed for the part.
What inspection data do you provide?
On request, we supply the documents your program needs: CMM or AS9102-style FAI reports against the drawing, material certificates with heat / lot traceability and a Certificate of Conformance. Parts are made under an ISO 9001-certified quality system.

Send your drawing and 3D model for a quote: an engineer reviews it before machining, NDAs are signed on request, and repeat batches follow the same inspection plan.
